History of Web Hosting

Earlier, there was no such concept of ‘Web Hosting’ and there was one mainframe to which multiple computers were connected.

Then during 1990, the first web server was hosted, since the computer was its own host, the shutting down of computer meant that the web hosting and the website on it disappeared for the whole world. Hence, external and physical data centres were established. Since, internet was gathering more users, companies started to purchase a rack in these data centres so they could plug their own computers with it. Providers soon realized that multiple small websites could be stacked in one physical server, hence providers began scaling mass-market hosting.

From late 1990’s to early 2000’s, the concept of Virtual Private Server (VPS) emerged, besides that, also emerged the concept of cPanel which enabled non-technical users to manage it. These developments eventually lead to the current-day hosting services.
