Not many people may know Verisign, but what they must definitely know is that Verisign is the company managing .com domain names, the most valuable TLD on the planet today. Just imagine .com going down for a couple of seconds. It has never happened, and the credit goes to Verisign.
Verisign is the official registry of .com domain names & they are also the registry for TLDs like .net .edu and many more.
In the domain industry hierarchy, registry appears after the regulator i.e. ICANN. It is the ICANN who decides which registry will manage which TLDs.
